The term |Norwich School| refers to three generations of artists, mainly landscape painters, who lived and worked in Norwich during the nineteenth century. Prominent among them were John Crome and John Sell Cotman, the one best known as an oil painter, the other for his spectacularly original watercolours. Although these artists had no common aesthetic, they were united by the Norwich Society of Artists. Later in the century the idea of a Norwich School was promoted by the Norfolk bourgeoisie (most notably the wealthy Colman family of Colmans mustard) as part of a larger effort to establish a distinctive regional identity. But establishing the extent to which these local and visiting artists - of widely varying opinions, associations and careers - really could be said to constitute a movement reveals a complex and intriguing story. Published to accompany the First comprehensive exhibition of works by Norwich School artists ever held, this catalogue presents a major reassessment of their place in British art, reflecting the range of their work - not only oils and watercolours but printmaking and etching - and the diversity of their styles - from the bravura of John Cromes early landscapes (|So much of the trowel|, sniffed a contemporary journalist) to Joseph Stannard's brightly lit and meticulously finished river scenes. The authors cast new light on the influences that shaped their work - notably the seventeenth-century Dutch painters, and J.M.W. Turner - their importance locally and nationally at the time, and their significance for later generations of artists.
