|Still Life: A Bike, A Doll, A Vacant Lot, my thesis for the Master Of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, is a collection of poems and short stories. The themes run from girl-child and teen identity to the emotional selves of both women and men. Revelation of character and honesty, authority and how they use their power, and the pleasures which make life worth living run throughout my poems and stories. I wrote in both genres because I didn't want to be limited to just one. A poem requires an intensity of experience. Jumbling each separate word and choosing a new one becomes a game in itself, like switching around numbers in Sudoku. Writing in fiction with six different stories produced a world of other people who hadn't existed before I conjured them. Titled for images used in the thesis, the writing incorporates paintings as subjects, childhood items not left behind when adulthood is reached, and the landscape of a vacant lot which acts as a blank canvas background.| -- Leaf iii.
